Cause and Affect

It is very important to realize that nuclear medicine's key to imaging is the physiology of our radiopharmaceuticals. This known it becomes critically important to understand why an abnormal uptake or distribution occurs that somehow or other does not related to to the typical behavior excepted by the radioactive agent. Consider it a cause and affect relationship. The question then is what caused the radiopharmaceutical to change its bio-pathway?

Consider this scenario: Many of our patients have multiple pharmaceuticals onboard prior to injecting our radioactive compound. Those multiple pharmaceuticals may, and at times will, cause the bodies physiology to change, hence altering the radiopharmaceutical uptake and its distribution. These links provide some causes that have been documented over the years. In the future should you run into something unusual you'll have a list of possible explanations.
