Research Interests

Earl Ellis

I have had two general areas of research interest. The first was arachidonic acid metabolism and eicosanoid action in the cardiovascular and central nervous systems, which included both in vitro and in vivo studies. I examined both normal and pathologic aspects of eicosanoids. My second, and current, area of interest is biochemical mechanisms of traumatic brain injury. These studies originally included in vivo approaches, but since 1995 have utilized an in vitro model of injury. My efforts have included both independent and collaborative projects. Procedures used have included in vivo studies, tissue culture, fluorescence microscopy, calcium imaging, HPLC, GC/MS, RIA, ELISA as well as techniques to study the cerebral microcirculation and lipid metabolism of the brain. This diversity has allowed us to pursue our goals across traditional lines of biochemistry, pharmacology and physiology. Current projects are examining the biochemical aspects of in vitro brain cell trauma.
