Vojislav Kecman

Vojislav (Vojo) Kecman, Ph.D., M. Sc., Dipl.-Ing.

is tenured Professor with the Computer Science Department at the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in Richmond, VA, USA, where he directs the Learning Algorithms and Applications Laboratory (LAAL). Vojo's Address, Phone & Fax, WebSites & Email are at the bottom of the page.
Note that "Vojo" is pronounced "Voyo"
. (And, YES, j, as far as the pronunciation is concerned, is the trickiest letter in the alphabet. There are at least four (4) entirely different pronunciations of j in European languages. In Spanish, it is pronunciated as h like in hot just a little 'raspier', in French as zh , in English as dzei , in Slavic languages and in German as y such as in yes , while Italian even almost doesn't use it (!?!) ).

Dr. Kecman was the Fulbright Professor at MIT, Cambridge, MA, USA; DFG Professor at TH Darmstadt; DAAD Konrad Zuse Professor at FH Heilbronn, FHTW Berlin and SWFH Soest; Research Fellow at Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA and at Stuttgart University, as well as the associate professor at both The University of Auckland and Zagreb University.

Vojo authored several books (click the button Publications to see all of them) in the areas of machine learning (data mining) and in the fields of mathematical modeling and simulation of system dynamics. Notably, ‘Learning and Soft Computing - Support Vector Machines, Neural Networks, and Fuzzy Logic Models’ published by The MIT Press, Cambridge, MA, (see, www.support-vector.ws), ‘Kernel Based Algorithms for Mining Huge Data Sets, Supervised, Semi-supervised, and Unsupervised Learning’, published by Springer-Verlag, Berlin, Heidelberg, (see www.learning-from-data.com) and a book on systems dynamic modeling ‘State Space Models of Lumped and Distributed Systems’, published by Springer-Verlag, Berlin, Heidelberg. The first one is a recommended university textbook at about 60 universities all around the world. Recently, he also co-authored a book on Optimal Control Systems which is published by CRC Press, Taylor & Francis Group, in 2009, and a book on Local Machine Learning Models titled ‘ Machine Learning by Adaptive Local Hyperplane Algorithm: Theory and Applications ’, published by VDM-Verlag, Saarbruecken, Germany, in 2010.

Prof. Kecman’s current research interests include: machine learning from experimental data (knowledge discovery, data mining) by support vector machines and neural networks, as well as modeling human knowledge by fuzzy logic systems. Theory, practice, philosophy and versatility of these soft computing tools is used in broad fields of different (nonlinear) regression and pattern recognition (classification, decision making) tasks in – e-commerce, bioinformatics, vision systems, computer graphics, data and signal processing, numerical mathematics, credit assignment problems, (financial) time series analysis, image compression, expert and decision systems and computer intelligence. Vojo’s other longlasting commitment was/is fighting AIDS (SIDA) disease by HIV infection modeling, which is a part of his modeling of biological systems devotion for many years.

Upon the invitations he delivered seminars in the fields of his research at - Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA; Moscow Engineering Physics Institute, MEPhI, Moscow, RU; University of California Santa Barbara; Rutgers University, Piscataway, NJ; Humboldt Universität, Informatik, GMD First, Adlershof, Berlin, TU Bremen, TU Dresden, TH Darmstadt, TU Clausthal and RWTH Aachen, Germany; Research Institute for Knowledge Systems in Maastricht; Melbourne University; The University of Waikato, Hamilton; Singapore National University; The University of Graz; The University of Novi Sad; The University of Banja Luka and many others.
