Welcome to the Cardiovascular and Renal Research Laboratory in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, VCU.  The overall goal of research programs in this laboratory is to explore the cell and molecular mechanisms regulating coronary circulation and renal pathobiology of hyperhomocysteinemia (hHcys) and hypertension. The laboratory has been well funded by NIH and other funding agencies for many years, and the team is productive for years with publications in highly prestigious journals. In current years, our new findings established some important new concepts in related research areas. Some highlights are below:
  • A current paper published in Hypertension was honored with an editorial commentary to applause the topic now taking center stage in endothelial cell redox signaling by death receptors (Zhang AY et al).
  • A new concept is established that NAADP, a novel second messenger, acts on TRP-ML1, a transient receptor potential channel, to produce Ca2+ release within myocytes (Zhang  F et al).
  • Guanine nucleotide exchange factor, Vav2, is a unique signaling molecule to mediate the early event in the cascade of hHcys-induced glomerular injury (Yi F et al).
  • Another publication was honored with an editorial commentary in Hypertension commending that the fundamental findings point to the importance of heme oxygenase in  the regulation of Na+ balance and hint at a vital link between HO, CO, NO, and Na+ excretion (Li N et al)
Thank all fellows and students in the laboratory for their hard work and great productivity and welcome more students to join us if you are interested in cardiovascular and renal research.
