Baseball's All Time Home Run Leaders

Will A. Rod top 800 Home Runs?

Commentary: April 6, 2010

The trend for the last three years does not bode well for ARod. His HR totals have gone from 54 to 35 to 30. That represents a drop of 44% [Hank Aaron's number]. The positive spin on last season was the way that ARod played during the second half of the season and the playoffs where he won his first World Series ring. 2010 will be a telling season. Will the pressure of being a Yankee be off and he will have a big season or will age continue its drag on his HR totals? Watch and enjoy because baseball is back.

Commentary: April 8, 2009

In 2007, it appeared that ARod was quickly becoming a sure thing to pass Barry Bonds to become the all time home run king. Much has happened since then. With the steriod question pointing at ARod and with his being out for the 1st month of the 2009 season, will ARod begin the slow downturn that all sluggers face. 2009 may be a telling season. Stay tuned.

2007 Summary

Now that the watch is over and we know that Barry has "hit" more home runs than Hank, we will always have the question of who was better -- Barry or Hank or Babe? Also, there are looming questions about steroid use over the past decade and whether there should be an asterisk next to Bond's total.

I conclude that based on the numbers presented below, the conversation of the summer of 2007 will be a mute point as long as Alex Rodriguez does not get hurt and plays out his full career. Through the first 12 years of his career, A. Rod's home run total has matched the highest home run total that Aaron, Bonds, and Ruth have put up combined. If you combined their highest season and then summed up their careers, the current big 3 would have hit nearly 1,000 home runs. If A. Rod can continues at his current pace, he should easily hit over 800 and far surpass any of the current top 3 sluggers home run totals.

Records are made to be broken. Enjoy the chase!!
