150 donors gave half of legislators' donations during the last election cycle

During the 1999 election cycle, current members of the Virginia General Assembly collected $17.7 million in itemized contributions from more than 10,500 donors.

But more than half of the money came from just 150 groups and individuals. They donated $9.5 million to state legislators, according to an analysis of campaign finance data by Virginia Commonwealth University's legislative reporting class.

Students obtained the data from the Web site of the Virginia Public Access Project, a nonprofit group that has computerized political contribution records.

Here are the top 150 donors. Students have written stories about many of the contributors.
