Donor No. 8: Virginia Automobile Dealers Association - $154,297

The Virginia Automobile Dealers Association gave $154,297 to state legislators for last year’s elections. The group was the eighth-largest campaign donor.

"With its expanded services and continued significant legislative activity and representation on behalf of 585 Virginia auto and truck dealerships, the VADA distinguishes itself as one of the strongest and most influential trade associations in the state," according to the organization's Web page. Almost every eligible dealer in Virginia belongs to the group.

The organization follows transportation committees in both chambers, said Anne Gambardella, the group's director of legislative and legal affairs. "The dealers know the benefit of speaking with one voice."

Gambardella said there is "no litmus test" for deciding which legislators to support. "We certainly support those that support business."

Echoing other top lobbyists, Gambardella said the auto dealers donate even to legislators who vote against the organization's issues. "Campaign contributions don't buy votes, but they do allow access," she said.

The association tracks several issues including franchise laws, worker's compensation, environmental emission concerns and financing. One area of particular concern for new automobile dealers is motor vehicle franchise laws, which govern the dealers' relationship with car manufacturers, Gambardella said.
