Commentary borrowed from The Phillips Collection:
Six O'Clock, Winter emphasizes the powerful force of the locomotive over man, as the El (developed in the latter half of the nineteenth century) looms over and shadows the bustling crowd.  The El changed the way people traveled to and from work and created a new class of commuter.  Public transportation extended beyond the boundaries of the city and increased the commuter's mobility, forever changing city life.
