Non-elephant animals

Abstract. Stanislaw Ulam once said to call the study of chaos “nonlinear science” was to call zoology “the study of non-elephant animals”. The analogue of non-elephant-ology will be fleshed-out, and the simplest of nonlinear systems reexamined for the purposes of relating the seemingly random to strange attractors. Subtopics may include kneading dough (a layman’s introduction to topological mixing) or the number 4.669201609102990671853…

Hopefully bolstering the thematic context of Math 490, non-elephant-ology will be considered not only for its structure and ubiquity in the sciences but also for its aesthetic appeal, particularly with respect to the fractal structure of strange attractors.
