FURTTENBACH, Josef
Architectura Civilis
Ulm: Jonus Sauer 1628
First edition.
Folio.
Contemporary stiff vellum; title in red and black.
The Architectura Civilis is one of Furttenbach's four treatises on civil, domestic, and recreational architecture. This work is principally a presentation of designs for municipal and public buildings, such as palaces and hospitals, but it also includes one of the earliest discussions of theatrical stage and set design, with an illustrative plate of an elaborate stage set (pictured), as well as the first discussion of stage lighting.
