Consulting Services
Consulting services provided by experienced pharmacy leaders and managers can provide significant assistance to hospital administration and pharmacy leadership regarding existing and/or future services and operations. Depending on the scope of the consultation, one or more of the following topics could be included. The following consulting services can be provided either by me or in collaboration with experienced professional colleagues. The general approach would be preparation of requested documents prior to on site meeting, discussion(s) on site, data collection, written report(s), and presentation of the work and recommendations.

  1. Practice Model for Institutional Pharmacy

  2. The interpretation and application of the recent ASHP Practice Model Summit (2010) to a hospital and/or health system is the focus of this consultation service.

  3. Pharmacy Services Plan for a Hospital / Health System

  4. There is a “pharmacy services plan” that serves the specific needs of a hospital / health system. No two hospitals are the same. Examples of topics unique or specific to a hospital/health system include: physical facilities of the hospital and the pharmacy department, pharmacy leadership and management, use of automation, philosophy regarding use of pharmacy technicians, drug related needs of nursing and the medical staff, decision makers for the institution, management decision making process, scope of patient types. This type of consultation requires one or more on site visits; review of selected documents; interviews with administration, nursing services, medical staff, pharmacy managers, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians. Deliverables - one or more reports with recommendations.

  5. Pharmacist Clinical Services – Design, Implementation, Evaluation

  6. This consultation focuses on the development of pharmacist clinical services, requirements for implementation, and methods to evaluate the outcomes of the services provided. This type of consultation requires one or more on site visits, review of selected documents, and interviews with pharmacists, pharmacy managers/leaders, nursing personnel, physicians, and hospital administration. Review of existing data from the services provided and/or data collected as required is essential. Deliverable is a written report describing existing services, proposed clinical services, and the results of an outcomes analysis.

  7. Assessment of Current Pharmacy Services and Operations

  8. This consultation focuses on the described need and scope of work required to meet the needs of the institution. One or more on site visits to meet with hospital personnel, and to ask questions of documents reviewed prior to site visit(s) are necessary steps in this type of consultation. A written report is the deliverable that will include: description of the review, identification of problems and needs for change in services and operations, outcomes of the services and operations, and recommendations for improving the services provided.

  9. Planning Pharmacy Services and Operations

  10. This consultation, better provided by two experienced pharmacy leaders/managers will provide recommendations for the next 3 to 5 years for the pharmacy department. Meetings with several groups of people with focus on existing pharmacy services and problems, and desired and needed services from the pharmacy department will be held. Documents on the agenda topics prepared for distribution prior to the consultant(s) meetings with hospital affiliated personnel are important. A written report is the major deliverable from this kind of consultation.

  11. Evaluation of Pharmacist Clinical Services

  12. The documentation and evaluation of pharmacist clinical services is a challenge. This type of consultation requires on site visit(s); review of descriptions of pharmacist clinical services; review of existing documentation and evaluation efforts; interviews with hospital personnel including physicians, pharmacists, nurses and administration; and application of financial and research methods for the evaluation of services. Deliverables includes one or more written reports with recommendations and interpretation of the data collected and analyzed.
