Assignments & Projects

Instructions:All assignments are to be prepared as a pdf in LaTeX, and (starting from A1 inclusive) handed in electronically via Blackboard. To submit via Blackboard, login to Blackboard and go to the course. Click on Assignments, and then on the Assignment number you wish to submit. Finally, any assignment which is not typeset in LaTeX will receive a 10% penalty.
- Instructions for using LaTeX:LaTeX is a standard tool in the computer science and mathematics communities for typesetting mathematical content such as equations, matrices, sums, integrals, etc. Instructions for setting up LaTeX are as follows. Note that some assignment questions may require a drawing as part of the solution; any such drawings may be done the old-fashioned way via hand if preferred (to do these in LaTeX, one option is IPE), scanned, and submitted electronically alongside the remaining questions done via LaTeX.
- In a nutshell, to use LaTeX, you'll need three things: (1) A LaTeX distribution (similar to a JDK for Java) (2) a LaTeX editor in which to prepare tex files (similar to an IDE such as Eclipse for Java), and (3) an introductory tutorial to teach you how to code in LaTeX. Click here for a relatively out of date link which should nevertheless help you with this setup, regardless of your platform. My editor of choice on Windows is WinEdt. Another option is TeXstudio.
- Click here to obtain a .tex template file which you can fill out for your assignment solutions. Here is the bibtex file you will need to compile it (this is for listing your references). (Click here to see what the compiled version of the template should look like.)
