November 11-15, 2005
The purpose of this proposal is to request support to hold the US - Egypt workshop on “Nanostructured Materials and Nanotechnology” in Egypt during the period of November 11-15, 2005. The workshop will be hosted by “ Mubarak City for Scientific Research and Technology Applications (MuCSAT)” in Bourg El-Arab, Alexandria and the Central Metallurgical Research and Development Institute (CMRDI) in Helwan, Cairo. These combined efforts will ensure a broad participation of the Egyptian scientists from multidisciplinary areas including Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science and Engineering and representing the different universities and research institutes in Egypt. We plan to bring together Egyptian and American researchers from various disciplines so that outstanding problems can be brought into focus and new trends can be planned for future investigations. We will not only assess the current status of the fields of nanostructured materials and nanotechnology, but more importantly we will also discuss cooperative research and joint projects between the Egyptian and the American scientists and we will also discuss the technological and economical impact of these projects. The proposed scientific activities are expected to stimulate further industrial and technological applications, which would lead to economic developments involving the private sectors in Egypt and United States.
The objectives of the workshop are to :
(1) Discuss utilization of the recent research in the synthesis, characterization and industrial applications of nanoparticles and nanostructured materials in both countries. A major focus of this workshop will be directed toward chemical and biological applications of nanoparticles and nanostructures.
(2) Address the fundamental science dealing with nanoscale phenomena and the environmental, educational, health, and societal impacts of nanotechnology,
(3) Stimulate cooperative research in nanotechnology between American and Egyptian scientists. The cooperative research is expected to lead to economic developments involving the private sectors in Egypt and the US.
