Joint US-EGYPT Workshop on Advanced Materials
September 24-28, 2000 Cairo, Egypt
Hosted by:
National
Research Center Dokki, Cairo, Egypt
Sponsored by: National
Science Foundation, Arlington, Virginia, USA
The first US - Egypt workshop on Advanced
Materials was held in Cairo, Egypt from September 24‑28, 2000. The objective of
the workshop was to stimulate cooperative research in the field of Advanced
Materials between American and Egyptian scientists. The
US team
included 12 researchers from
multi‑disciplinary areas from US universities and National laboratories as shown
in the list of participants. In addition four
representatives from NSF attended the workshop. The
Egyptian participants included over 50 scientists from Egyptian universities
and research centers. Twenty four research talks were presented by the
participants. In addition, open discussions and preparations of collaboration
proposals were conducted in five parallel sessions representing the focused
areas of the workshop. These sessions were:
(1)Nanostructures and Nanocomposites.
(2)Smart Materials
(3)Thin Films and Magnetic Materials
(4)Photonics and Electronic Materials
(5)High Performance Materials.
The topics covered in the presentations and
discussions included synthesis of nanomaterials, nucleation and growth
mechanisms, characterizations of nanostructures, electronic, magnetic, optical,
and catalytic properties, and applications of nanomaterials. The workshop
program is
available here.
This workshop was an excellent format for commencing a dialog between U.S. and Egyptian scientists. This initial interaction will lead to future collaborations that will be of value to both countries. The meeting format was well organized, allowing for presentation and discussion of a very diverse set of topics in the field of advanced materials. Based on the input from most of the participants, the following recommendations were established:

Host
As part of the collaboration effort, Dr. Sherif Eissa was invited to visit NSF and two research universities; Virginia Commonwealth University and North Carolina State University. This visit took place from January 3 to January 11, 2001. Also, Dr. El-Shall visited the NRC in Cairo in June 2001. These visits resulted in the initiation of several projects between the Egyptian and the American universities.
