US - Egypt Workshop on Laser Chemistry and Applications to Materials and Biomedical Research

October 2-5, 2004 Cairo, Egypt

Hosted by: National Research Center of Egypt
Sponsored by:
National Science Foundation, Arlington, Virginia, USA

The 2004 US - Egypt workshop on "Laser Chemistry and Applications to Materials and Biomedical Research" will be held during the period of October 2-5, 2004 in Cairo, Egypt. This workshop is sponsored by the National Science Foundation and will be hosted by the National Research Centre of Egypt.

The objectives of the workshop are to:

(1) Discuss utilization of state of the art of laser technology in research in both countries.

(2) Address the fundamental science and technology of laser chemistry; the applications in materials including nanostructures, thin films, nonlinear optical properties, material shaping, surface modifications and applications in biomedical research including characterization and imaging of tissues, diagnosis and treatments.

(3) Stimulate cooperative research in the field of lasers between American and Egyptian scientists. The cooperative research is expected to lead to economic developments involving the private sectors in Egypt and the US.

The workshop will deal with the fundamental science and technology of lasers including spectroscopy, photochemistry, materials applications, nonlinear optics, nanostructures, thin films, and medical and biomedical research. The workshop will address three general areas of research:

1. Lasers and Properties, Applications in Fundamental Science
2. Applications to Materials
3. Applications in Biological and Medical Sciences.

This is an interdisciplinary workshop drawing participants and speakers from Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, Engineering, and Biological and Medical fields. We plan to bring 12-14 researchers from multi disciplinary areas from the United States to interact with the Egyptian researchers over a four-day workshop in Cairo. The synergism produced by bringing together the US and Egyptian researchers in these areas involving laser technology is expected to enhance the scientific collaboration between the two countries which will take this field a step closer in realizing its enormous potential for novel technologies.
