Logging into the Suns Using X-Win32

This document decsribes the process of logging into the Sun workstations in the VLSI Design Lab using the Xwin-32 program on the PCs. Xwin-32 provides an X Window emulator for the PCs. You begin the login process by starting the Xwin-32 program using the Start->Programs->X-Win32->X-Win32 menu tiem on the PC. The result will be a blank X window screen as shown below.

The next step is to select the individual Sun you want to log into and start a session for it. You do this by placing the cursor in the menu bar of the X-Win32 window and pressing the right mouse button. Select the Sessions->machine_name menu item to start a session on a given Sun (where machine_name is the Sun you want to log in to) as shown below.

There may be a dialog box that comes up with a warning about an "Unknown host". Simply click the OK button to remove it. The result will be the appearence of the initial Sun login screen as shown below.

Type your login ID into the box and click OK or hit Enter. The result will be the password screen as shown below. If the dialog box does not say Common Desktop Environment, use the Options->Sessions->CDE menu item to change it to that now. Type in your password and hit Enter.

You should momentarily see the Solaris banner screen as shown below.

This will be followed by your default environment on the Sun as shown below (note that your's may be different). If you are returned to the initial login screen, there is some problem with your Unix environment and you should obtain assistance from the system administrator.

Logging Off

When logging off of the Suns under X-Win32, be sure to log off of the Sun workstation before closing the X-Win32 application! Failure to do so could hang the X-Win32 application and leave some of your programs running on the Sun.

To log off the Sun, use the button in the CDE menu bar at the bottom of the screen. When the dialog box comes up, select the button to continue the logoff process. The result should be a blank X-Win32 window. You can now select another session if you want to log into a different Sun, or close the X-Win32 window in the normal manner if you are done working on the Suns.
