How Many Ounces in 40 Pennyweights? An exploration of basic math textbooks

Abstract: What is the purpose of a textbook? How do textbooks reflect students’ experiences? How do they reflect the expectations of how a classroom will function? Not surprisingly, math textbooks differ substantially by generation and location. We’ll examine why and how this is true. Looking at arithmetic and algebra textbooks from the past two centuries, as well as contemporary Russian math books, we'll explore what has made these textbooks so different from one another.
