Series Circuits - Implications

Series Circuits

When one device stops passing current, everything stops!

However, if one device 'shorts out' so that its resistance becomes nearly zero, then the other devices continue to operate.

Implications --- Example: --- Question:

The voltage drop across the whole circuit is just the sum of the voltage drops across each device.

The voltage drop across each device can be different.

Implications --- Example: --- Question:

Use the relation V=IR for the whole circuit and for each individual device.

Use the fact that voltage drops in series add.

Resistances in series add.

Implications --- Example: --- Question:

Use V = IR for the whole circuit or

I = V/R
