Research

My research is focused on the Developmental Biology of the nitrogen-fixing, filamentous cyanobacteria. I am particularly interested in the differentiation of Heterocysts and Akinetes.

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines, Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Mark Twain [Samuel Langhornne Clemens] (1835-1910)

The arrow points to a well developed heterocyst. Heterocysts and Akinetes are two cell

Types that differentiate in the filamentous cyanobacteria. The Heterocyst can fix nitrogen and

the Akinete can help the organism survive stress conditions. I am presently concentrating my

efforts on understanding the differentiation of Akinetes!
