Abstract

Recent expts. indicate that the no. of hydrogen bonds in solns. increases in the crit. region of the solvent.  This effect can be explained by the d. fluctuations near the crit. point.  A theory of this unusual effect is developed.  The theor. predictions are compared with the exptl. data on hydrogen bonding between perfluoro-tert-butanol and di-Me ether in supercrit. sulfur hexafluoride.  The theory requires no adjustable parameters and is in excellent agreement with the exptl. data.  Possible applications of this effect for hydrogen-bonding solns. and polymer mixts. are discussed.
