Building optimization-based models of cellular metabolism

Abstract
Flux balance analysis (FBA) is a mathematical modeling paradigm for investigating cellular metabolism and generating hypotheses about the effects of genetic engineering. Cells are assumed to make optimal use of scarce resources in achieving an assigned objective. Objectives may be to maximize growth, energy production, or biomass production. A model is essentially a collection of reactions known to occur in an organism coupled with an objective. Software and algorithms for facilitating the construction of models will be presented, as well as a summary of ongoing work.
