Oral Streptococcal Fitness And Virulence Gene By Systems Biology

This is a NIH-funded project for 5 years to study oral streptococci related infective endocarditis (IE). By screen the comprehensive gene deletion mutants of Streptococcus sanguinis, we will collect as many as possible virulence genes that involve in infection endocarditis. A Rabbit IE animal model will be used to collect virulence factors in vitro. Blood, serum and saliva will be used to collect virulence factor ex vivo. Systems biology approach will be used to study virulence factors to understand the virulence mechanism as a whole. This combination of in-depth and breadth research will provide an unprecedented understanding of the pathogenesis of S. sanguinis in IE. The immediate goal of the project is to discover virulence-related genes in S. sanguinis, and identify key virulence factors through network analysis. The long-term goal of this research is to establish strategies for the prevention of streptococcal IE.
