All sessions are taught in Cabell Library, Room 320 and are open to all VCU faculty, staff, and students. Additional sessions will be added to meet demand, if possible.

Please note the following:

  • Each session requires a separate, completed registration form. Forms are available from University Computing Services in Cabell Library, Room B-30 (828-6650).
  • Class fees are $45 for classes that use workbooks (see schedule) and $25 for non-workbook classes. Fees are not refundable unless you cancel at least two business days before the course is scheduled.
  • Completed forms must be accompanied by a check or must include the signature of an appropriate budget authority who will certify that this fee can be charged to your department budget code.
  • Substitute attendees are allowed only if University Computing Services is notified prior to class starting time. Call 828-6650.

Microcomputer Topics

All sessions are taught on the Windows 95 platform. Either Windows 95 Beginner or Windows to Windows 95 Transition or equivalent knowledge is a prerequisite for all classes. Experienced Macintosh users are welcome to take classes in any applications that are also available on the Mac (Word, Eudora, HTML, etc.).

Windows 95 - Beginner

Cost: $45 (includes workbook).

Prerequisite: None.

Introductory topics include orientation to personal computers, the Windows screen, the mouse, the start menu, window components, mouse settings, My Computer, Network Neighborhood, shortcuts, using Help, running applications, the taskbar, working with multiple windows, Windows Explorer orientation, and other topics as time allows. This class or Windows 95 Transition or equivalent knowledge is a prerequisite for all other microcomputer classes.

Windows 95 - Intermediate

Topics include customizing desktop and Control Panel objects, customizing Help, more about Windows Explorer, protecting data, associating files with applications, Quick View, running Microsoft Word-DOS applications, managing print jobs, solving printing problems, ScanDisk and Disk Defragmentor tools, examining Windows 95 technology, basics of installing new hardware.

Windows to Windows 95 Transition

Cost: $45 (includes workbook).

Prerequisite: Working knowledge of Windows 3.x.

Experienced Windows 3.x users build on their current knowledge to learn Windows 95. Topics include orientation to desktop objects, Control Panel, disk drives and system folders, shortcuts, Network Neighborhood, switching among multiple tasks, Windows Explorer, finding and manipulating documents and folders, printing, Recycle Bin, customizing Windows 95. This class or Windows 95 Beginner or equivalent knowledge is a prerequisite for all other microcomputer classes.

Users will build on their general knowledge of word processing to learn Microsoft Word. Topics include orientation to Word, fonts and font sizes, Format Painter, paragraph formatting, paragraph borders, indents, numbered and bulleted lists, tabs, headers and footers, setting margins, styles, templates, AutoCorrect, printing.

Topics will include learning the features of Composer, basic text formatting, using color, background images, lists, hypertext links, inline graphics, and placing your page on the VCU Web.

Courses pertaining to the Saturn, Atlas, and Titan RS/6000 computers.

Introduction to the R/S 6000's

Cost: $25.

Prerequisite: None.

Fundamentals of using the RS/6000 computers. Topics include use of the menu, overview of available application software, creating and managing files, using editors, and basic commands to list, view, copy, delete, and print files.

Pine E-Mail on the RS/6000's

Cost: $25.

Prerequisite: None.

Introduction to the Pine electronic mail system on the RS/6000 computers. Topics include sending messages, handling received mail, using mail folders, using the address book, customizing your mail environment.
