Provide leadership and direction for Academic Technology by working with the Vice Provost and the Directors of Media and Computing Services and of Faculty Support Services. Manage, organize, and direct the resources and personnel to support the VCU Web and the instructional and research technology needs of faculty and students. Implemented evaluation of Research Computing Services through the faculty Research Computing Advisory Committee. Developed partnership with VCU Life Sciences to support the President’s life sciences initiative and to increase research computing resources. Planned and implemented improvements to web services including web-based account creation, calendar of events, and searching. Planned and implemented with Faculty Support Services the upgrade from Blackboard 4 to Blackboard 5, Level 3.
Associate Director, Research Computing &
Initiatives, March, 1997 – June, 2001
University Computing Services – MCV Campus
Responsible
for managing the full range of information management resources for midrange
systems including planning, developing, and overseeing the computing services
provided with emphasis on researchers and scientific applications. Manage, organize, and direct the resources
and personnel to develop and maintain systems, software, and operations for
researchers, the web, and email. Led
cross campus Unix team to plan and implement
consolidation of research computing, academic computing, and web and email
servers. Improved performance and
lowered the costs of web-based services by planning and implementing the
transition of all web servers from Unix to Linux. Cost effectively expanded the research
computing resources by planning, procuring, and implementing a Linux Beowulf
cluster. Planned and implemented the
migration of faculty, researchers, staff, and students on the Health Sciences
Campus from VAX/VMS email to standards-based IMAP email.

Responsible
for managing the full range of information management resources for midrange
systems including planning, developing, and overseeing the information services
provided to the Health Sciences campus as a whole. Manage, organize, and direct the resources
and personnel to develop and maintain systems, software, and operations for the
information needs of the Health Sciences campus. Resources include a cluster of 4 VAXs with approximately 100 GB disk storage, an SGI PowerChallenge with 40 GB disk storage, 2 IBM SP nodes with
100 GB disk storage, and 6 SGI Indigo2 high performance workstations. Personnel include 2 Operating Systems
Analysts, a Database Analyst, 2 Applications Analysts, and 2 Operations
Specialists. Developed and nearing
completion of 1st year of 3 year plan to migrate approximately 5000 faculty,
researchers, staff, and students from VAX/VMS to UNIX Client/Server computing. Developed and in process of implementing plan
to migrate researchers from VMS-based Ingres
relational database to UNIX-based DB2 relational database utilizing GUI front
ends.

planning, developing, and overseeing the information services provided to the
school as a whole. Manage, organize, and
direct the resources and personnel to develop and maintain systems, software,
and operations for the information needs of the school. Resources include a cluster of 2 VAXstation 4000s and a MicroVAX 3100 and a stand‑alone
VAXstation 4000, all running VMS, approximately 150 Pcs (IBM &
compatibles, Macintosh, Amiga), 20 Sun workstations, ALL‑IN‑1, Pathworks, a campus wide ethernet
network, an Appletalk network, and connection to the
Internet. Manage budget of approximately
$250,000. Supervise 3 employees, 2
professional and 1 clerical. System manager for VAXs and ALL‑IN‑1. Tripled number of ALL‑IN‑1 users
from 30 to over 90. Coordinated
database use among 5 departments and expanded database use to 11 departments
while eliminating dual entry in all departments. Specified, planned, and implemented the
design, purchase, and installation of a VAXcluster to
replace aging equipment.
