Welcome

Dr. Jayasimha Atulasimha started as an assistant professor in Mechanical Engineering at Virginia Commonwealth University in August 2008. He received his MS (2003) and PhD (2006) in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park and B.Tech (2001) in Mechanical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. He worked as a post-doctoral research fellow in Mathematics (2007-2008) at North Carolina State University and Smart Materials (2006-2007) at Royal Military College, Canada.

Our research group focuses on understanding the coupling between mechanical, electrical and magnetic properties of multifunctional materials at multiple length scales. Complementary experimental and modeling work is performed on both gaining an understanding of multiferroic material behavior and using them in novel actuator and sensor devices as well as developing new energy efficient paradigms for nanomagnet based computing. Applications include nanoscale multiferroic logic and memory devices, ultrasensitive strain and acoustic sensors, sonar, energy harvesting and study of magnetoelectric materials for surgical applications.
