John A. Hartmann - Composer

Biography

John A. Hartmann (b.1975) is a composer of classical and electro-acoustic music.  His music has been described as ?engaging? and ?fluid? by concert-goers.  New works been commissioned by a variety of ensembles including the nationally recognized Yale Camerata.  He received his Bachelor of Music degree in Music Composition from Virginia Commonwealth University and his Master of Music degree in Music Composition from The University of Texas at Austin with a concentration in electronic/computer music.  He also holds a Master of Arts in Religion degree with a concentration in Liturgical Studies from Yale Divinity School through the Yale Institute of Sacred Music.  John is interested in creating accessible electro-acoustic liturgical music and examining the theological meaning in music.  His music has been performed throughout the United States in cities such as New York City, New Haven (CT), Richmond (VA), Chicago, and San Diego.  Recordings of John's music have been broadcast in cities such as Boston, New York City, Richmond (VA), and Charlottesville (VA).

John has studied music composition with Donald Grantham, Dika Newlin, Russell Pinkston, and Dan Welcher and he has participated in individual workshops with William Bolcom, Libby Larsen, Augusta Read Thomas, Tarik O'Regan, Peter Knell, and Stephen Hartke.  He has also attended masterclasses given by John Corigliano, Lowell Liebermann, Denis Smalley, Barry Vercoe, James MacMillan, Sir David Willcocks, Judith Weir, and Krzysztof Perderecki.

John is an active member of SEAMUS (Society of Electro-Acoustic Music in the United States) and is a founding member of the Dissassociative Collaborative.  John is the Director of Marketing and External Relations in the Music Department at Virginia Commonwealth University.  John currently lives in Richmond, VA with his spouse, Jessica, and their son, Ian.
