1. Multi-Channel and Multi-Interface Wireless Network

Multiple channels are available in recent wireless technology such as IEEE 802.11 opens the possibility of increasing network capacity. The goal of this project is developing hardware device, software system and protocols to exploit the possible network capacity.
This project needs multi-disciplinary study that combines knowledge and methodologies of computer science, electrical engineering and mathematics.

2. Multicasting in Wireless Network

Wireless network has many unique characteristics that makes wireless network different from the conventional networks. One of the characteristic is the broadcasting capability and that makes the multicasting protocols developed for the wired network is obsolete, or at least less efficient. To utilize the wireless network capacity, one should develop new multicasting protocols for wireless network. This project analyzes and developing efficient wireless multicasting protocols through quantitative modeling and computer based modeling.

3. Smart RFID networks

RFID is mainly used in logistics these days and will be prevailing in various areas to make out everyday life more convenient. To utilize the RFID in large, one should form a network using smart RFID or wireless sensors. This project investigates efficient protocols to combine RFIDs and sensors nodes to form a smart RFID networks.

4. IP/Optical network

It is believe that physical network will be formed as optical network and IP network will over the optical network. This project especially investigates the way of connecting islands of optical network through electronic networks.

5. Dual Interface Wireless Sensor Platform

We are currently prototyping a wireless sensor device that house two physical transceivers. The device will provide 300 kbps raw data rate and are able to transmit and receive data simultaneously. Such will significantly the overall networking performance of wireless sensor network. The device will also have additional external permanent storage such that application specific data can be stored and retrieved. Our platform support standard inter-device communication such as UART and SPI. Various sensors can be connected to board conveniently. Example sensors include but not limited to: medical sensor, audio sensor, video camera, environmental sensor, and chemical agent sensor. Connecting analog sensors is greatly facilitated by the onboard operational amplifier circuits.

6. Intrusion Detection and Prevention in High-speed networks

With the fast growing of INTERNET globally and more and more businesses rely on a healthy network; Network security is becoming increasingly important. One main challenge is to protect the network from malicious attacks such as Denial-of-Service attack or Internet worm embedded in seemingly harmless web pages, without having to slow down the normal traffic? We are investigating novel hybrid software and hardware solutions that can offer comprehensive protection of the whole network using a signature-based approach. We have demonstrated a prototype network device that can sustain a real-time packet screening at 10 mbps, which is sufficient to support a small network.
