How close is close enough?

Mendel did this really good experiment that showed that a cross of hybrids give progeny phenotypes in a 3 to 1 ratio, proving that... but wait! Those progeny weren't in a 3 to one ratio, at least not exactly. Maybe his experiments disproved Mendelian genetics! At issue is how close do the numbers have to be.
