Fall 2012

I. Basic Information

A. Your name
II. Biological Information
Consider how comfortable you are with the following topics (as defined by the notes Strategies of Life):

A. How information passes from DNA through RNA to protein

B. The mechanism by which genes might determine the function of an organism

C. How amphipathic lipids can self-assemble into the sphere shown in Fig. 2B

D. The relationship between monomers and the four major types of biological polymers

E. How in general enzymes might determine the nature of a cell

With this in mind, how could class time best be spent to meet your needs?
Do you have any other questions concerning the material in the notes?

Choose up to three study questions that you would most like discussed in class:

SQ1 SQ2 SQ3 SQ4 SQ5 SQ6 SQ7 SQ8
III. What is a Gene?
A. How far have you gotten in the tutorial, "What is a Gene?"?
You can answer by referring to the last item you addressed (e.g. III.3).

B. Provide a statement that describes as accurately and completely as possible your current understanding regarding how a cell determines where a gene begins.

Consider how comfortable you are with the following topics (as defined by the tour What is a Gene?):

C. The relationship between a gene and a genome

D. The coordinate system

With this in mind, how could class time best be spent to meet your needs?

IV. Annotation of a Gene

Consider how comfortable you are with the following topics (in the notes Annotation of a Gene):

A. How to choose a gene to annotate

B. The mechanics of annotating the gene

C. How to find evidence to justify the annotation

With this in mind, how could class time best be spent to meet your needs?

V. Library Treasure Hunt (Problem Set 1)

Anything you want to go over regarding this problem set?

VI. Miscellaneous

A. There will be two more exams this semester -- the first one should be sometime around early October and the second one late November. However, there's some flexibility as to exactly when they would be. By now you might have an idea what periods this semester are busy for you and which are more free. If you let me know when are particularly good times or bad times, I can accomodate as many people as possible. Please use the space below for that purpose.

B. Any other comments, questions, suggestions, or concerns you may have?

Thanks!
