Introduction to Bioinformatics
Symposium on Phage Genome Analysis
Spring 2013

  • Pre-symposium (April 25, 2013)
Practice round of presentations on individual research projects. Presentations are limited to two minutes and follow the general and specific suggestions for creating presentations. The presentations are critiqued by three other presenters, as described.
  • Symposium (May 3, 2013)
The symposium is held jointly with members of the VCU Phage Discovery Lab, a year-long lab experience intended to introduce students to the joys of research. Each research group presents a brief introduction of the thread that binds their projects together, then each member of the group presents one brief scientific story drawn from his/her individual project, focusing on a bite-sized scientific question, how it was addressed through the tools of bioinformatics, and what result came from the experiment. The stories are drawn from larger, written research projects, written according to specific suggestions
