Spring 2009

I. Basic Information

A. Your name

B. Special event RSVPs

Ordinarily, you're free to attend class functions as you wish, with no need to apologize.
However, there are three functions in which you play a central role, and so I need to know your plans:
  1. Will you be attending the March 4 ISBC meeting and presenting as scheduled?

  2. Will you be joining us during your lab period March 16 (immediately after Spring Break) to mentor high school students?

  3. Will you be presenting your project at the end of the semester? (no doubt you will, but we'll worry about that later)

C. Individual meetings

Some time after the second exam, Wednesday classes will cease and instead we will be meeting individually.
I need to set up a schedule. Please list three or more hours (preferably Tuesday and Wednesday)
in which you can meet each week for say 20-30 min (no need to list Wed 9AM).

II. Sequence analysis strategies (old business)
On Monday I provided an example of how you might use NCBI Blast to analyze a new sequence
and to find pertinent articles (of course that's just a starting point for a literature search).

How comfortable do you feel in analyzing a new sequence (at least as far as we've discussed)?

Other comments, questions, concerns regarding sequence analysis?

III. Loops (old business)

How are things going with looping and mapping using BioBIKE?
Are you clear on why these things might come in handy in bioinformatics?

IV. Edwards & Rohwer (2005) (repeat from Monday's questionnaire)

A. Choose study questions that you would most like discussed in class:

SQ1  SQ2  SQ3  SQ4  SQ5  SQ6  SQ7  SQ8  SQ9  SQ10  SQ11  SQ12  SQ13

Perhaps the following will inspire you to comment in the box below:

  • The difference between metagenome sequencing and conventional sequencing (e.g. sequencing of the Drosophila genome)?
  • The need for metagenome sequencing?
  • Extracting information from Figure 1 of the article?
  • Interpretting Figure 2 of the article?
  • The notion of a prophage?

V. Was Mendel Right? (first glance)
  • Any problems at first glance understanding the issues presented by the tour?
  • Any idea how to resolve the problem posed at its end?
  • Any idea what this has to do with bioinformatics?

VI. Miscellaneous

Put here any miscellaneous comments, questions, suggestions, concerns you may have.

Thanks!
