How to use Zoom
Fall 2019

Use of Zoom rooms: VCU subscribes to Zoom, which enables it to offer virtual meeting spaces, where you can communicate from a distance (voice and text) and share computer screens. These rooms are very useful for group meetings, for example.

I've set up two Zoom rooms for our purpose. If you need a room for a group meeting, try one of them. If someone is already there, try the other. If both are occupied (which will be the first time in course history), contact me and I'll set up more. You should have gotten the links to the rooms by e-mail.

First contact: The first time you try to connect to a room on a given device, you'll be asked to download some software. It is very lightweight and should take a moment.

Running Zoom: Henceforth, when you click the zoom room link, two windows should pop up. The first says

"If nothing prompts from browser, download & run Zoom."
and then (after a few seconds)
"Please click OK if you see the system dialog".
It will sit there forever unless you take care of the second popup window, entitled "Launch Application". Zoom Meetings should appear in the box. If so, click Open Link (If it doesn't appear, I have no idea what's going on). A few seconds after clicking the link, a new screen should pop up, the Zoom Meeting room. You may have to join the audio if you're not already joined. Doing so enables you to talk to other participants. If you don't join the audio (perhaps because you don't have a microphone), you can communicate by phone and use Zoom just to share screens.

Sharing screens: Any participant can share a screen by clicking Share Screen. That icon doesn't appear when someone else is already sharing a screen. The sharer has to stop sharing for another person to share.

Ending the meeting: Please leave the meeting when you're through. To do so, mouse over to the bottom of the Zoom Meeting room screen, where you'll see Leave Meeting in the lower right corner. You'll also see other things, like a chat icon, if that's of any use.
