II. Preliminaries to Golub et al (1999)
A. How comfortable are you with the scenario itself and the issues raised in the Introduction to the article?

D. How comfortable are with your understanding of what the data within the training set represents?
Comments for questions II.A through II.D:

III. Hands on statistics

A. Were you able to calculate the means and standard deviations for the training set?

B. Were you able to find the formula for the measure of correlation and to calculate it for the training set?

C. Do you see why the formula of the measure of correlation is well suited to its appointed task (i.e. why it measures a useful correlation)?

D. Were you able to graph the measure of correlation in the way described in the notes?
Comments for questions III.A through III.D:

IV. Relevance to class prediction (and beyond)

A. How comfortable are you with your understanding of what Figure 2 literally means?

B. How comfortable are you with your understanding of the analysis represented in Figure 2 can give us a handle on the significance of apparent correlations between the pattern of a gene's expression and a distinction between two classes?

C. How far have you been able to get in understanding the use of preditors by means of weighted votes?

D. How comfortable are you with the remainder of the article?
Comments for questions IV.A through IV.D:
IV. Miscellaneous

A. Please choose up to four study questions from the notes that you would most like discussed in class:

B. I find that I must be away all day Friday, November 21, and so I'm wondering how best to use what would otherwise be a normal class day. I've thought of the following:

(a) Treat it as a problem set day (it is anyway), but one without my usual presence
(b) Get an outside speaker to talk on something of some interest to bioinformaticians
(c) ?
Any thoughts? (put in box below).

C. Put here any miscellaneous comments, questions, suggestions, concerns you may have.

Thanks!
