Approximately 70 students from
the Maggie Walker Governor's School orchestra,
chorus, and jazz bands, led by
Taylor Barnett, traveled to Boston April 20th-23rd to participate in music
clinics at Boston University and offer a free public performance at Fanueil
Hall at Quincy Market in Boston.
On Friday, April 21st, clinics were led by Dr. Ann Howard Jones on the New England Conservatory (chorus), James Merenda, Director of Jazz at Boston University (jazz) and Dr. David Hoose, Director of Orchestral Studies at Boston University (orchestra) at Marsh Chapel on the Boston University campus.
Later that day, from 4-6PM, all
four groups (including Jazz I and Jazz II)
played an outdoor concert outside
Faneuil Hall for tourists and after-work
visitors to Quincy Market. They
drew a nice-sized, appreciative crowd.
Students spent Saturday visiting
Boston landmarks including the Freedom Trail,
Fenway Park, Harvard Square and
the Public Gardens and attended a
Saturday night performance of
the Blue Man Group.
Students' thanks go Taylor
Barnett and Leigh Ann Rankin of the Music Boosters
for making trip arrangements
and reservations and to Phil Tharp
and our chaperones for accompanying
the group on the trip.

The MLWGS Music Boosters is a parent led organization that supports the music program through fund raising, event planning, and organizing parent involvement. Very few of the extra-curricular activities that are available to the music students at Maggie Walker would be possible without the support that the Music Boosters provides.
The major activities that the Music Boosters organized/participated in were:
- Back To School Picnic for the
music program
- Fall Festival
- Night Of The Dragon Silent
Auction
- Winter Concert (pre-concert
dinner, program, ushers,
CD recording, post-concert reception)
- Spring Trip (fund raising,
planning)
- Spring concert (pre-concert
dinner, program, ushers,
CD recording, post-concert reception)
- Student Awards Banquet
The Music Boosters consists of the Boosters Board and parents who have filled out a membership application and paid the membership dues. The board meets every month and stays in contact with the parents through e-mail. Parents may volunteer to take part in activities, but are not required to.
