Research in American History
This course uses canonic and vivid article-length essays from historians of the American scene as a way for graduate students to become more familiar with conceiving, structuring, and elaborating their own original ideas and research.
We will meet weekly for the first half of the semester, dedicating each meeting to the discussion of articles that have strong connections in chronology, theme, or methodology. During the second half of the semester, students will undertake their own research and writing, meeting intermittently to discuss their findings and drafts. In all, the goal of this course is to demystify the process of writing an article-length piece, and to produce something worth reading.
