The field of bioinformatics covers a wide range of topics, approaches and research areas.

Acquiring and analyzing the DNA sequence of a genome is one of the earliest bioinformatics research pursuits.

Studying what that DNA and the proteins expressed from that DNA do, when they do it, where they do it, and how they do it is another field of research in bioinformatics.

Analyzing large amounts of biological data and trying to utilize and make sense of the data is a general definition for bioinformatics.
