 An oil lamp with a glass chimney and perforated metal lid to protect the flame from high winds. Louisiana is prone to hurricanes so it does make sense that a house on the Gulf of Mexico would have these in the house, especially during the summer months because the Atlantic Hurricane Season is from June 1 until November 30.

 

2.      513.27    deep-red Turkey carpet

 The Turkey carpet is a rug that is from Turkey. The deep-red color that it has is most likely from the roots of the Kok Boya plant. The roots of the plant are known as madder and the color that they make is called Rose madder which is a deep red color.

 

3.      515.7     bellpull

A bell-pull is a cord or handle attached to a bell-wire, by pulling which the bell is rung.

 

4.      518.2      hopper

 A hopper is an inverted pyramid or cone in which anything passing into a mill to be ground usually passes. Here the brain is called the hopper probably because when people think the process is described as grinding so it seems to fit that Robert Penn Warren would use this as a description for thinking.

 

5.      526.9     hypodermic

A hypodermic pertains to the use of medical remedies introduced beneath the skin of the patient, especially with injections.

 

6.      527.10     .38 automatic

 An automatic pistol that was manufactured by the United States Government during the early 1900’s.

 

7.      527.21     tester bed

 A bed with a canopy over it suspended from the bed posts or the ceiling.
