*~1846, Cass' parents die, Gilbert (15 years older) takes Cass to home in Valhalla, Cass is 16

           *Cass is there 3 years being tutored and learning plantation management

           *Cass spends 2 years managing plantation in Mississippi

*~1851, Cass sent to Transylvania College, Lexington, KY

          *meets Duncan and Annabelle Trice

*1852, Cass, 22 years old, at arbor scene

          *spends summer at plantation in Mississippi

          *autumn, love affair with Annabelle begins

          *love affair continues for one year

*1854, March 19, Duncan Trice dies

          *~March 20-21, conversation in summerhouse about Phebe

          *Annabelle leaves after conversation, sells Phebe, returns a few weeks later, conversation about Phebe being sold at summerhouse

          *Cass searches for Phebe

          *returns to Mississippi and works on plantation for 2 years

          *sets slaves free

*1858, fall, goes to Jackson, Mississippi to study law

*1861, January 9, Mississippi passes ordinance for secession

          *Cass enlists as private in Mississippi Rifles

          *gets shot

*1864, dies in hospital in Atlanta, GA, grave unmarked

*1870, Gilbert is "well off"

*1875-76, Gilbert is rich

*1880, Gilbert has a fortune, living in NY

*1914, Gilbert dies, between ages 94-95
