Part-Writing

For computer assisted learning experiences with 4-voice chorale style voice-leading, the only software I know of at this point is Counterpointer by Ars Nova. The following worksheets provide students with some instruction and practice. They correlate with the textbook we currently use which is The Musician's Guide Series, by Clendinning, et al.

Chapter 11 - Chorale Style Voicing

Chapter 12 - Basic Phrase Model

Chapter 13 - Embellishing Tones

Chapter 14 - Chorale Harmonization

  • Figured bass #1 - includes illustrations of all figured bass varieties and some exercises on building chords from figured bass.

Chapter 15 - Expanding the Basic Phrase

Chapter 16 - Further Expansions of the Phrase

  • TUTORIAL - analyzing Bach chorales with modulations. Not everyone will agree with the analysis. If it increases your understanding in some way, however, then it is a worthwhile process.
