Goal and Expected Outcome: For students to successfully sing and play as an ensemble in a 45 min. class block.

Objectives:

  • 4.1 The student will sing a song in tune with a clear tone quality.
  • 4.2 The student will perform rhythmic patterns that include quarter notes, quarter rests on pitched instruments or non-pitched instruments.
  • 4.14 The student will exhibit respect for the contributions of self and others in a music setting.

Set stage:

  • Take a look at the lyrics to the song, “Skin and Bones”. What do you think happened after she opened the closet door?
  • I’m going to sing the song and tell you what happens next.
  • Sing song with a loud “BOO” at the end.

Process:

  • Sing it together.

Take a look at some of the rhythms we will be playing today. Which instruments play the same rhythm?

  • Clap rhythms. Go all the way through without repeating.
  • Pat BX/BM rhythm while singing the song.
  • Demonstrate on instrument. Select students to play.
  • Pat AX rhythm.
  • Demonstrate on instrument. Select students to play.
  • Pat SX rhythm.
  • Demonstrate on instrument. Select students to play.
  • Assign other instruments and play each part individually.
  • Play entire song while singing.

Closure: Who can clap the rhythm that I point to?

Adaptations:

  • Preferential seating and pairing
  • Rhythm written on individual card
  • Visual cues for off-task behavior.
