ORCHESTRAL AND CHAMBER MUSIC

Playing with the New York Philharmonic have always been my proudest, most gratifying moments in music. My first experience with the New York Phil was in 1963. It was at the Lewisohn Stadium with Seiji Ozawa in his debut performance with the orchestra. Since that concert (Bernstein's, On the Waterfront) there have been many thrilling performances with the world's leading conductors. Memories of Leonard Bernstein are first to come to mind when reflecting on the inspiring times with the orchestra. There have been many more outstanding memories, especially that of Karel Ancerl way back in the late 1960's who taught me the important nuances and correctness of the rhythm in the saxophone solo of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. The biggest thrill in all music that I have been part of will always be Osaka, Japan, 1970 playing third clarinet in the orchestra's opening night performance of Mahler's Ninth Symphony. There have been many a performance when sitting in amongst the most beautiful music written when I can't help thinking that it doesn't get any better than this.
