CHEM 507, Introduction to Natural Products

This survey course introduces the student to several main classes of natural products including carbohydrates, carboaromatics, polyketides, terpenes, and alkaloids. Biogenetic pathways, typical structures, biological properties or uses, and structure elucidation, both through classical degradative techniques and modern spectroscopic techniques, are presented.

My section of this course covers the medicinal chemistry of natural products. The material presented will give a brief history of the use of natural products in medicine, sources and methods of isolation of biologically active natural products, and types of biologically active natural products and their specific uses as drugs.
