Bruceantin

Structure of bruceantin

Bruceantin is a triterpene of the quassinoid type isolated by S. Morris Kupchan and coworkers from the Ethiopian tree Brucea antidysenterica Mill. (Simaroubaceae) in 1972. Fractionation of the extract of the bark of B. antidysenterica was guided by bioassays for antileukemic activity and cytotoxicity. Bruceantin was a candidate for clinical use by the National Cancer Institute, but insufficient supplies of the pure compound precluded development.
