MÉTHODOLOGIE DE LA RECHERCHE / RESEARCH METHODS
PROGRAMME DE DOCTORAT CONJOINT / JOINT DOCTORAL PROGRAM
ASSIGNMENT FOR MONDAY, JUNE 23
(Class Meeting 13)
It is the turn of each of the following students to write a paper for this class meeting: Lefa TENG, Eduardo SCHIEHLL, Ginette SHEEHY, Zhenzhong MA, Xiaofei LI, Zhongzhi HE, and Philippe KANONKO. The topic is triangulation.
Remember that you must write your paper as if you were presenting your responses to an audience of other researchers (for instance, other doctoral students, professors, journal readers) who are completely unfamiliar with the topic and who have not read the papers that you have read.
When writing your paper, be sure to state the question at the beginning of the paper.
The paper must be submitted no later than Sunday, June 22, at 10am. Follow the instructions in the syllabus for submitting the paper to AllenLee@Management.McGill.ca. By noon, all of the papers will be forwarded to the entire class via the electronic discussion list, Lee-PhD@Management.McGill.ca. All students must read these papers in preparation for class.
1. (Lefa TENG, Eduardo SCHIEHLL.) Consider the following paper that you have already read for an earlier class: Bernd H. Schmitt, Laurette Dubé & France Leclerc, "Intrusions into Waiting Lines: Does the Queue Constitute a Social System?," Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Volume 63, Number 5, 1992, pp. 806-815. It is a positivist and primarily quantitative paper. Suppose you are a researcher who is also interested in "intrusions into waiting lines" and "does the queue constitute a social system?," but you wish to integrate positivist and interpretive approaches and to mix quantitative and qualitative data. Name, explain, and justify up to four things that you would do that are different from, or in addition to, what Schmitt, Dubé & Leclerc did in their study. Be sure to take advantage of insights from the studies by Lee and by Jick.
2. (Ginette SHEEHY, Xiaofei LI.) Consider the following paper that you have already read for an earlier class: Brewer & Rivoli, "Politics and Perceived Country Credit Worthiness in International Banking," Journal of Money, Credit & Banking, 1990. It is a positivist and quantitative paper. Suppose you are a researcher who is also interested in "politics and perceived country credit worthiness in international banking," but you wish to integrate positivist and interpretive approaches and to mix quantitative and qualitative data. Name, explain, and justify up to four things that you would do that are different from, or in addition to, what Brewer & Rivoli did in their study. Be sure to take advantage of insights from the studies by Lee and by Jick.
3. (Zhenzhong MA, Philippe KANONKO, Zhongzhi HE.) Consider the following paper that you have already read for an earlier class: Michael J. Fischer, "'Real-izing' the Benefits of New Technologies as a Source of Audit Evidence: An Interpretive Field Study," Accounting, Organizations & Society, Volume 21, Number 2/3, 1996, pp. 219-242. It is an interpretive and qualitative paper. Suppose you are a researcher who is also interested in "'real-izing' the benefits of new technologies as a source of audit evidence," but you wish to integrate positivist and interpretive approaches and to mix quantitative and qualitative data. Name, explain, and justify up to four things that you would do that are different from, or in addition to, what Fischer did in his study. Be sure to take advantage of insights from the studies by Lee and by Jick.
