
I define the IS field as concerning itself with research and practice about the problems and solutions that emerge from the interactions at the interface between the technological and the behavioral – just as I showed before in Figure 1. Therefore, by my definition, our IS field does not deal with technology alone, or with behavior alone, or even with the simple concatenation of technology and behavior. Our IS field deals with the unique phenomena that emerge when the technological and the behavioral interact – just like different chemical elements that react when they form a compound – and this is what makes our field different from the traditional science and technology disciplines and the traditional behavioral disciplines.
