STUDY QUESTIONS AND DISCUSSION QUESTIONS FOR TUESDAY, March 4
Case: Division among the Ranks
Theme: Ethics
1. (Michel Kreidi, Mihai Maicanehnli, Arthur Wong): Critique Beta Consulting Corporation's business strategy. To do this, you first need to identify (as best as you can) what business strategy or business strategies that Beta Consulting appeared to have.
2. (Anh Thi Nguyen, Oliver Charbonneau, Shayne Mitchell): What were the requirements that the CASE tools at Beta Consulting Corporation were supposed to satisfy? How well did the CASE tools satisfy these requirements?
3. (Abbas Khalil, Danny Wong): Describe, in detail, what you believe to be Beta Consulting Corporation's main business process(es). After that, cover the rest of the WCA framework: describe the participants, the technology, the data/information, the product/service, and the customers.
4. (Karim Samaali, Stuart McLean, Glen Goldman): For the Beta Consulting Corporation, describe the changes in organization structure and jobs subsequent to the adoption of CASE technology.
5. (Jane Lu, Popi Makris-Lambrinakos, Scott Godfree): How did the functional consultants stereotype the technical consultants? How did the technical consultants stereotype the functional consultants? Which group was right? How did the contrasting views held by the two groups influence Beta's systems development work?
6. (Maya Chechelnitsky, Todd Savage): Orlikowski states (p. 207) that her study "suggests that any substantial mediation of production work by information technology can be expected to lead to changes in the division of labor and patterns of dependency among the actors involved." What changes (if any) in the division of labor and patterns of dependency among the actors took place at Beta Consulting Corporation, due to the introduction of information technology in the form of CASE? ...at North American Operations of Otis Elevator Company, due to the introduction of information technology in the form of OTISLINE? ...at Phillips 66, due to introduction of information technology in the forms of the EIS?
7. (Kenneth Yau, John Alexander): Orlikowski states (p. 209): "The message here is that, when provoked sufficiently, individuals can and do rebel against structural and technological imperatives." Would you consider the rebellious behavior by these individuals (such as the functional consultants at Beta) to be understandable? ...to be ethical? Justify your answer, where you try to apply some of the material from the class lecture on Thursday, February 20; try to apply the stockholder theory, the stakeholder theory, and the social contract theory.
8. (Sami Rejeb, Mireille T. Nguyen): Your firm has just purchased some CASE tools for its systems development department. You have been asked to review Dr. Orlikowski's case study and to identify important lessons learned in the CASE experience of Beta Consulting Corporation. First, if Beta Consulting could implement the CASE tools all over again, how should Beta Consulting do it differently? Second, based on the mistakes made at Beta Consulting, make some recommendations about how to implement the new CASE tools.
