It was worn by the members of the South African Constabulary (raised and commanded by B.-P. during the South African War) as being both distinctive and practical. It shaded the face from sun, protected it from heavy rain, shaded the eyes when scouting at a distance, was useful for watering horses, for fanning a fire, for carrying water in emergencies, and in many other directions. It suited all climates and is still worn by the members of the Royal Canadian North-West Mounted Police. -----Original Message----- From: Gary Bryant [mailto:wbryant@csc.com] Sent: Friday, January 14, 2005 10:56 AM To: Jim Penney Cc: 'Chris Vernon'; 'Chuck Smith'; 'David Estes'; 'Everett Winn'; 'Jason Smoth'; 'John McCulla'; 'James Johnson'; 'A.J. Enough strolling down memory lane. The Staff Admin Guide, page 24 has a section on Uniforms for Staff. Item 4 says "Participants and staff will wear the same hat." Traditions die hard....... So, trivia time. Who knows why it is called a BP hat?
