Textbook:  Introductory Linear Algebra with Applications, 7th Edition, by Kolman & Hill

Description:  This course will explore systems of linear equations, matrix operations, determinants, vectors, linear dependence, bases, dimensions, linear mappings, eigenvalues, and geometric applications.  Parts of chapters 1 – 8 of the textbook will be covered.

Class Meetings:         Lecture, examples, questions, and group work will fill most days.

Attendance:   Perfect attendance is highly recommended.  Excessive absences may result in failure or dismissal from class.

Group Assignments:  Homework problems will be assigned daily and should be completed on an individual basis as preparation for quizzes.  Each week several of the assigned problems will be collected and graded as a group assignment.  These will be announced in advance.  Groups are expected to work together to complete the problems.  Time for group interaction will be part of each class period but groups may find it necessary to meet for a few minutes before class begins to ensure that an assignment is completed and ready to be turned in.  Late assignments will not be accepted.  The entire group will be assigned the same grade unless it is clear that some group members have not participated in completing the assignment.

Participation:   Participation includes (but is not limited to) being on time for class, working on group assignments, helping others, and attempting problems and answering questions posed during lecture.  This class contains students at varying levels of mathematical ability.  Students with stronger math abilities are expected to help students with weaker mathematical abilities.

Quizzes:  Three hour-long quizzes will be given.  Do not miss a quiz  day!  Excuses are not normally granted unless requested in advance -- exceptions are rarely granted but might be made for illness or emergencies if cleared with the instructor.   The quizzes are not comprehensive.

Quiz Dates:  Quiz 1  - Thursday, May 22                     Quiz 2  -  Thursday, May 29

                     Quiz 3  - Thursday, June 5

The quizzes will be given at the beginning of the class period and will last one hour.

Calculators:  The TI-83 or TI-83 Plus Graphing Calculator is required for this course.  Instruction in using TI-series calculators will be part of the course.  Comparable calculators by other companies may be used, however the student is responsible for clearly understanding how the calculator operates.  TI-89 or TI-92 calculators (or other brands that will do symbolic manipulation) are not allowed.

Grading:   The final grade will be computed as follows:

                 Group Assignments                 :   30%

                 Quizzes             :  60%

                 Participation     :                 10%

Grades:   Final Grades will be assigned according to the following scheme:

               90%+    A

               80%+    B

               70%+    C

60%+    D        These percentages are "guaranteed minimums".

Honor Code:   VCU recognizes that honesty, truth, and integrity are values central to its students and its mission as an institution of higher learning. All students enrolled in this course are responsible for acting in accordance with the provisions of the VCU Honor System.  Students are encouraged to work together on homework assignments, projects, and classroom preparation.  All our quizzes, tests, and exams will be “Pledged” work, for which students must neither give nor receive help.  Please note: Bringing unauthorized material into a testing room or taking unauthorized material out of a testing room, including material stored in calculator memory, is a violation of the VCU Honor System.  All violations will be prosecuted to the full extent and may result in automatic failure in this course.  Students should familiarize themselves with the details of the Honor System as outlined at www.students.vcu.edu/rg/policies/rg7honor.html and the VCU Resource Guide.

Disabilities:   “Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 require Virginia Commonwealth University to provide an ‘academic adjustment’ and/or ‘reasonable accommodation’ to any individual who advises us of a physical or mental disability.  If you have a physical or mental limitation that requires an academic adjustment or an accommodation, please arrange a meeting with me at your earliest convenience.  Additionally, if your coursework requires you to work in a lab environment, you should advise the instructor or department chairperson of any concerns you may have regarding safety issues related to your limitation(s).”
