Textbook:  Linear Algebra with Applications, 4th Edition, by Gareth Williams

Description:  This course will explore systems of linear equations, vector spaces, linear dependence, bases, dimensions, linear mappings, matrices, determinants, quadratic forms, orthogonal reduction to diagonal form, eigenvalues, and geometric applications.  Chapters 1 – 7 of the aforementioned textbook will be covered.

Prerequisites:  MATH 200 and (MATH 211 or MATH 201)

Class Meetings:  Lecture, examples, questions, and group work will fill most days.

Attendance:   Perfect attendance is highly recommended.  Excessive absences may result in failure or dismissal from class.

Electronics:   Turn off all cell phones, pagers, laptop computers, and music devices before entering the classroom.  The classroom is a place of serious study of the subject of linear algebra that requires your undivided attention.

Tests:   Four tests will be given.  Do not miss a test day!  Excuses are not normally granted unless requested in advance -- exceptions are rarely granted but might be made for illness or emergencies if cleared with the instructor.   The fourth test (i.e. final exam) will be comprehensive.

Test Dates: Test 1  - Wednesday, February 18     Test 2  -  Monday, March 29

                     Test 3  - Wednesday, April 28           Final    - Monday, May 10, 1:00 – 3:50 pm

Calculators:  The TI-83 or TI-83 Plus Graphing Calculator is required for this course.  Comparable calculators by other companies may be used, however the student is responsible for clearly understanding how the calculator operates.  TI-89 or TI-92 calculators (or other brands that will do symbolic manipulation) are not allowed.

Quizzes: Unannounced quizzes will be given on a regular basis.  Quizzes will be open book and notes and will cover recent material.  They will often be part of a group activity or based on a recent homework assignment.  In class assignments missed for excused or unexcused absences cannot be made up.  Check the class web page for missed homework assignments.

Grading:   The final grade will be computed as follows:

                  Quizzes        :  10.0%

                  Tests             :  70.0%

                  Final Exam  :  20.0%

Students who make 90% or above on each of the first three tests and whose class average is 93% or above will get an automatic A in the course and do not have to take the final exam.

Final Grades will be assigned according to the following scheme:

90%+    A

80%+    B

70%+    C

60%+    D        These percentages are "guaranteed minimums".

Honor Code: VCU recognizes that honesty, truth, and integrity are values central to its students and its mission as an institution of higher learning. All students enrolled in this course are responsible for acting in accordance with the provisions of the VCU Honor System.  Students are encouraged to work together on homework assignments, projects, and classroom preparation.  All our quizzes, tests, and exams will be “Pledged” work, for which students must neither give nor receive help.  Please note: Bringing unauthorized material into a testing room or taking unauthorized material out of a testing room, including material stored in calculator memory, is a violation of the VCU Honor System.  All violations will be prosecuted to the full extent and may result in automatic failure in this course.  Students should familiarize themselves with the details of the Honor System as outlined in the VCU Resource Guide.

Disabilities:   “Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 require Virginia Commonwealth University to provide an ‘academic adjustment’ and/or ‘reasonable accommodation’ to any individual who advises us of a physical or mental disability.  If you have a physical or mental limitation that requires an academic adjustment or an accommodation, please arrange a meeting with me at your earliest convenience.  Additionally, if your coursework requires you to work in a lab environment, you should advise the instructor or department chairperson of any concerns you may have regarding safety issues related to your limitation(s).”
