Attorney General approves
70% car-tax cut
Attorney General Mark L.
Earley said yesterday that Gov. Jim Gilmore has submitted a state
budget that meets the legal and fiscal conditions to finance a 70
percent car-tax reduction this year, the Richmond
Times-Dispatch reports.
The House has backed Gilmore's
plans to cut the car tax by 70 percent this year and 100 percent next
year. The Senate has called for a 50 percent reduction this year and
a 70 percent reduction next year.
Gilmore has said that he
will veto any bill that has less than a 70 percent car-tax cut.
Senate considers expressing
'regret' for eugenics
After being passed in the
Senate Rules Committee yesterday, a resolution for the Legislature
to declare its "profound regret" about the eugenics movement that
forced about 8,000 Virginians to be sterilized heads to the Senate.
This resolution, if passed
by the Senate, will be the first statement of regret by a United States'
legislature regarding eugenics, according to the Richmond
Times-Dispatch.
Wildlife Federation to
get tax exemption in Virginia
The National Wildlife Federation,
with headquarters in Fairfax County, may get a permanent property
tax exemption of more than $300,000 a year.
The NWF will be one of
the nonprofit groups to receive a break from local taxes, despite
being a national organization, The
Washington Post reports.
